Taylor Swift’s sweetheart hair and shimmering makeup at the 2011 BMI Country Awards:

Friday, November 11, 2011

At last night’s 2011 BMI Country Awards, however, Swift did slightly switch up her typical winged-eye-and-bright-lips look, by adding a warmer shimmer to her eye makeup and skipping the red lips for a muted pink-plum shade instead.  Swift’s curls are also more relaxed than we’ve seen before, but still styled in her classic one-sided wave. This is definitely a look worth copying for upcoming holiday parties.

Afternoon beauty fix / Replicate Nina Ricci’s ultra-feminine Fall ’11 lips:

Wednesday, October 5, 2011

Makeup pro Pat McGrath created lips that looked like velveteen tulip petals by painting them with opaque and creamy sherbet shades of lipstick. We recommend trying Nars’ Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in “Bolero” ($30 at NARS counters andnarscosmetics.com)– it’s peachy-pink, matte and pretty close to perfect.

Afternoon beauty fix / How to wear barely-there shades without looking washed out:

Think pink instead of taking the word “nude” too literally, as lips are flushed not flesh tone (whatever that colour may be) when they have nothing on them. Avoid shades with brown or beige undertones, and choose a pinky taupe or copper instead. The most flattering shades are close to your natural lip colour, with a subtle shimmer or shine. We like the rosy coral and gold ribbon in Nars’ “Beautiful Liar” ($24, atnarscosmetics.com) because it’s barely there but flattering, like fancy lingerie for the lips.

Afternoon beauty fix / Conceal irritated, red eyes by opposing them on the colour wheel:

I recommend taking a scientific approach to your beauty regime and look to the colour wheel for inspiration. Tints that are completely opposite on the spectrum attract and flatter one another so, if your eyes are super-red, use the complete opposite hue—a cyan blue—as your creative solution. For office-appropriate wear that still looks cool, apply pigment with a wet, fine-tipped brush along your waterline and subtly at the base of your upper lashes. Blue shadow is no longer reminiscent of the ’80s: Jil SanderZac Posen3.1 Phillip Lim, and Chanel all put sea-blue eyes on their runways for Fall 2011, and we especially love Outremer Single Eyeshadow by Nars ($26, narscosmetics.com) for its extreme azure illumination.
